hoboのものづくりにおける基本理念である"こだわり"を紹介してゆく『PHILOSOPHY』。第１回目は今期コレクションアイテムの装飾に使用されているビーズにスポットを当て、広島のビーズ工場を訪ねた。
In this section we will be introducing, what we consider the most important aspect of our production, quality craftsmanship. For our first special we bring you a photo documentary of the glass beads manufacturing factory that handcrafts the beads we use in our latest collection.
貯蔵庫に収容された樽の中にはビーズの原料として使われるガラスチューブが、色や形状の種類ごとに区分されている。今や10,000種類以上あるビーズはこのガラスチューブと、他の薬品との調合から始まる。
The raw materials are kept in separate barrels before they are compounded to create a variety of different colored beads. This factory can produce over 10,000 different bead types.
マグマが湧き出る噴火口のようなこの穴は、ガラスを溶かす為の溶融炉。1300℃というとてつもない高温で20時間かけてじっくりと調合された原料を溶かしてゆく。
This is the furnace used to melt the compounded raw material. It is heated at temperatures reaching 1300°C (2400°F) for 20 up to 20 hours.
飴色に溶けたガラスを鉄製のシャベルで取り出す職人。冷めないうちに製管用の釜に入る形へ素早く整える。その腕前は熟練した職人だからこそ成せる技。
The molten glass is taken out of the furnace and prepared for its next step, the stretching process.
整えられたガラスを製管用の釜へ。下へ流れ落ちるガラスを、手作りの管引機で空気を吹き込みながらゆっくりと引っ張り、筒状へと伸ばしてゆく。
The still molten glass is carefully stretched and air is blown in during this process creating a hollow tube.
工場内に立ちこめる煙と、異様なほどに長いレール。ガラスを急激に冷やさないようにレールには細かく砕かれた炭が敷かれている。職人の知恵とアイディアが垣間見れる。
The stretched glass goes through a long cooling process in which it is placed on type of charcoal. The charcoal enables a gradual shift in temperature to prevent cracks appearing in the class.
灰まみれのガラス管の束は、完全に冷めきると美しい色へと変化する。持ち運びしやすいよう1mほどの長さにカットされ、次の検品作業へ送り込まれる。
Brilliant colors emerge after the cooling process. The glass is then cut to a length of one meter for easier handling.
ガラス管の太さを検品するのに使われる年季の入った選別管。白いペンキで書かれた数字はガラス管の外径を表し、この寸法を通ったものだけが次の行程へ進める。
These tools are used to measure the length and diameter of the cut glass. The entire meter long tube is measured from top to bottom to ensure consistent width throughout.
検品されたガラス管は、色・サイズごとに整頓されラックに収納される。静謐なこの空間でガラス管は、ビーズに切断されるまで保管される。
Tubes that have passed inspection will be stored until an order comes in to be cut and shaped into beads.
ようやく切断され形になったビーズ。７００℃の温度で切断面に丸みを与えるために再度溶かす。炭粉がまぶされているのは中心の穴が塞がらないようにするため。
The cut glass is re-heated to the temperature of 700°C (1300°C) to round off the edges. Ash is applied in this process to prevent the hole from closing.
大きな洗浄釜で付着した炭粉を落とし、７００℃の電気炉で再加熱することにより表面の輝きが生まれる。手間ひまかけて出来上がった宝石のようなビーズ。それはまさに、職人たちの知恵と情熱の結晶だった。
The ash is washed away and the beads are heated one last time at 700°C to gloss the surface. At the end of a long and delicate process the beads are complete.
